Immunologic aspects of lepromatous leprosy with special reference to the study of antibodies.

چکیده
The role of immunity in leprosy has attracted great interest. Studies of immune mechanisms in patients with lepromatous leprosy. have indicated that these patients suffer not only from hyporeactive state of cell-mediated immune responses (20), but also from hyperreactivity of antibodymediated immune mechanisms (6). The latter findings are based on tests which include complement fixation, hemagglutination, electrophoresis, precipitation and immunofluorescence, together with a variety of antigens not from lepromas, but also from Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other Actinomycetales. In view of these obs~r vations, a study of antibodies along With immunoglobulins and the rheumatoid factor has been undertaken in patients with lepromatous leprosy and the immunogenesis of the findings are discussed.

Immunologic aspects of leprosy with special reference to the circulating antispermatozoal antibodies.
Macroscopic sperm agglutination in gelatin, sperm immobilization and tanned red cell hemagglutination tests could detect antispermatozoal antibodies respectively in 41%, 37%, and 23% sera of 35 leprosy patients, including 5 female cases. Interestingly, all of the above tests were positive in one serum from a female patient with borderline leprosy. Sperm antibodies were detected in both lepromat...
متن کاملLangerhans Cells in Skin Lesions of Leprosy
Background: Langerhans cells are important in the pathogenesis of leprosy. A recent study reported that these cells were almost absent in the epidermis overlying lepromatous lesions. Objective: To investigate a possible relationship between the number of Langerhans cells and the histopathologic spectrum of lesions in patients with leprosy. Methods: An immunohistochemical staining for S100 prot...
متن کاملImmunologic aspects of leprosy as related to leucocytic isoantibodies and platelet aggregating factors.
The incidences of various iso- and autoantibodies in a random population of 112 unselected leprosy patients is presented. Low titers of leucocytic isoantibodies and platelet aggregating factor were detected in the sera of a variable number of such patients. The leucoisoagglutinins were found in 8% of the sera of tuberculoid as well as lepromatous leprosy patients, whereas the leucoisocytotoxins...
متن کاملSome considerations regarding the immunology of leprosy.
In leprosy, an infection produced by a mycobacterium, M. leprae, which is an obligatory intracellular parasite, it is the cell-mediated immunologic phenomena which intervene as defensive mechanisms, and not circulating antibodies. A high proportion of the general population is immune to the disease. It seems that in each generation there is a small group of persons susceptible to infection who ...
متن کاملImmunologic aspects of leprosy with reference to extravascular immunoglobulins: their excretion profile in urine.
An aliquot of 24-hour urine collected from leprosy patients was concentrated and examined for the presence of albumin, transferrin, IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD, D3, kappa and lambda light chains by the gel diffusion technic using respective monospecific antisera. Urinary protein excretion profile in lepromatous leprosy patients showed that while excretion of transferrin in the urine was negligible; that...
